10 Reasons Why Knoxville is a Great Place to Work
By Tim Walker
East Tennessee is a great place to live and work! Here are 10 reasons why we think the Knoxville area is one of the best places in the country to advance your career.
1) A Close Knit Community Where Relationships Are Important
If you’re new in town, it won’t take long for you to realize how important relationships are. Knoxville is one of those towns where everyone knows someone, and you’re likely to land jobs as well as business through mutual friendships and connections.
2) No State Income Tax
Tennessee has no state income tax! That means you get to keep more of your money for investments or whatever else you’d like to spend it on (good barbeque, hiking boots, lots and lots of orange).
3) Low Unemployment Rate
Knox County’s unemployment rate is 4.1%. That’s lower than the national unemployment rate, which is at a 2017 low of 4.4%.
4) Low Cost of Living
Another contributing factor to Knoxville’s economic success is it’s low cost of living. According to Best Places, Knoxville’s cost of living is 20% lower than the national average. Even better, housing costs are nearly 40% lower than the national average.
5) A small town with big things
I like to say Knoxville is one of those towns that has one of everything. It’s not so big that you’re overwhelmed with traffic and big city problems. However, it’s big enough to support a growing list of major manufacturers and corporations. The perfect mix of big city perks and small town feel!
6) Easy Commute
That small town feel also means shorter commute times to work. If you’re used to big city travel times, you’re in for a pleasant surprise! The average commute is less than 20 minutes in Knoxville.
7) Great Businesses Call Knoxville Home
The Knoxville area is home to a great variety of small and large employers. They include manufacturing companies like DENSO as well as the Pilot Corporation, Regal Cinemas and Clayton Homes. These businesses and many others are a visible part of the community
8) Plenty of High Tech Jobs
Don’t forget about high tech jobs in Knoxville either! Several large IT and Engineering firms are based in Knoxville. Oh, and don’t forget about the Department of Energy just up the road in Oak Ridge.
9) Small Business Haven
Big businesses aren’t everything. Knoxville recognizes how important small business is. In fact, Thumbtack recently named Knoxville one of the 10 best cities for small business in the country.
10) Work Life Balance
It can’t all be work, right? When it comes to play, the Knoxville area offers a wide range of fun for the whole family. East Tennessee boats a number of lakes and rivers, plus the Great Smoky Mountains, of course! You also can’t write a post about Knoxville without mentioning the Vols. Tennessee football may dominate the coverage, but there’s plenty of sporting events to take in throughout the year. Downtown Knoxville has also experienced a revitalization in recent years and is home to several dozen great restaurants and bars.
